The art of weaving is so important to the Bhutanese culture and everyday way of life that practically evey home has a loom, often in a special room, used mainly for weaving. Weaving is an ancient skill identified with women. It is an important source of earnings for the family and enables women to gain a reputation throughout the country. Young girls begin learning the art of weaving from their mothers at an early age and become expert weavers at 18 or 19 years of age.
The technical achievement in Bhutanese textiles is outstanding and unmatched by textile art anywhere else in the world. The textile art is integrated into all aspects of life in this tiny Himalayan kingdom. Gifts of cloth mark important social transitions such as career promotions and marriages. Textiles are prestige, commodity, wealth, forms of payment, and capital, as well expressions of religious devotion.
Experience the Bhutanese weaving culture directly by visiting small weaving villages. You will have opportunity to see some expert weavers at work and discover how advanced a textile culture the Bhutanese have developed in an isolated corner of the world. Learn the distinction between Tsongtham, pieces woven to be sold commercially, and Hingtham or literally Heart-Woven, the pieces that are woven by the artisans for their lord or most loved ones. Weaving is like a meditation for the weaver. The time slows down. Maybe, you might even try to look deeply at these weavings and meditate at the intricate symbols used in these textiles. They definitely do tell a story!
