Be among the first Westerners to have trekked to the base camp of the World's Highest Unclimbed Peak!
|
This is one of the most beautiful treks not only in Bhutan, but in the entire Himalyan world. It combines a true sense of solitude and remoteness with an incredible diversity of terrain and dramatic scenery. Thick forests, emerald mountain lakes and ridge-top-views are a big part of the scenic splendor as we reveal our favorite places that make this trek so special. And we introduce you to the highlights of one of the most precious treasures of Bhutan: close-up views of Gangkar Phunsum, the worlds highest unclimbed peak!
The trek starts from Dur Village in Bumthang. The begining part of the trail follows the trout-filled Dur Chhu river and gradually climbs through thick forests of cypress, juniper, spruce, hemlock and maple. The trail winds up and down past two secluded turquoise lakes and scenic mountain passes. After crossing Tholi-La pass (15,700 feet) on the third day, the trail switchbacks downhill past beautiful forests and drops all the way to the confluence of the two rivers. From the confluence, we gradually climb to Gangkar Phunsum Base Camp past beautiful mountain lakes, yak herders camps and stunning views of snow-covered mountains. As we enter this remote region, we take time to inspect the hillsides and rocky slopes for musk deer, Himalayan bear and blue sheep frequenting the area.
The moment Gangkar Ghunsum comes into view, it creates a memory that lasts forever. It arouses soul-stirring awe in all who behold it. The feeling of revelation, humility, and glee is indelible. We will spend two days at the base camp for rest, excursions and to feast our eyes on the majestic artwork of Mother Nature. There are a number of day hiking possibilities to get close-up views of the peaks.

We will return via the Ngang village to Tokto Zampa where our vehicle will be waiting for the short drive back to our hotel in Jakar.
Important Note
Most of our trips take place during the busy season and it is difficult to secure reservations on Druk Air and in Hotels in Paro, Thimphu, Wangdi Phodrang, Tongsa and Bumthang. The farther in advance that you book, the more likely it is that we can confirm the resrvation you choose.
The rule of thumb is: Book as far in advance as possible, but don't hesitate to contact us at the last minute if free time suddenly comes your way.
